Pending the Employment Equity Amendment Act’s commencement, the Department of Employment & Labour has embarked upon a series of nationwide workshops intended to ‘broaden consultation’. This is according to a media statement among other things confirming that the 2024 employment equity reporting period is ‘still applicable’.
The workshops will include discussions on proposals for sector-specific employment equity targets outlined in draft regulations first gazetted in May 2023 for public comment. A revised version was released in February 2024 for further input.
As has been widely reported, the Employment Equity Amendment Act, 2022, not only empowers the Minister to regulate the setting of sector specific sector-specific numerical targets. It also operationalises section 53 of the principal statute, making an employment equity compliance certificate a prerequisite when tendering for state contracts.
