EMPLOYMENT EQUITY: BOSA TO TACKLE PERSISTENT OBSTACLES

Build One South Africa (BOSA) deputy leader Nobuntu Hlazo-Webster has gazetted a notice calling for input by 30 May 2026 on a draft Employment Equity Amendment Bill. Her intention to table the proposed new piece of legislation was published as its procedurally required explanatory summary.

According to that summary, once finalised the Bill will seek to curb ‘employment practices … prevent(ing) the realisation of equal pay for work of equal value’ and thereby ‘perpetuat(ing) cycles of economic exclusion’. To that end, it is envisaged that the draft Bill should:

  • make pay transparency mandatory in employment practices, and
  • prohibit the determination of remuneration ‘based on previous salaries tainted by historic bias’.

BOSA’s view is that, by addressing these issues decisively, the proposed new piece of legislation will assist in creating conditions for a more equitable and competitive job market – especially for those affected by ‘persistent salary disparities based on race, gender and disability’.
