ENERGY BILLS: NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

Please note: On 19 September 2023, the same notice was published on Parliament’s website – twice (the identical notice for each Bill) – along with a committee media statement.

The National Assembly’s Mineral Resources & Energy Committee has issued a notice on the Parliamentary Monitoring Group website calling for written submissions by 13 October 2023 on the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill and the Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill. Both Bills were tabled in August 2023.

By providing for the establishment of a transmission system operator entirely separate from Eskom, the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill seeks to create an open market platform for competitive electricity trading.

The National Nuclear Regulator Amendment Bill’s overarching objective is to align the Act with International Atomic Energy Agency best practices. These include making financial provision for costs associated with the safe rehabilitation or decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
