ENERGY PERFORMANCE REGULATIONS FOR NON-RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS: MORE AMENDMENTS GAZETTED

The Department of Mineral Resources & Energy has gazetted a second set of amendments to regulations on the mandatory display of energy performance certificates in non -residential buildings. In force since 8 December 2020, the regulations were first amended in November 2022, when state-owned buildings meeting certain requirements were given until 7 December 2025 to comply.

The latest set of amendments makes it mandatory for privately owned and state-owned non-residential buildings of a specified ‘type and size’ to be registered with the South African National Energy Development Institute within 12 months.

The new amendments also:

  • redefine the terms ‘accounting officer’, ‘accredited body’ and ‘energy performance certificate’, and
  • define the term ‘registered professional’.
