ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATIONS: ELECTRICITY TRANSMISSION-RELATED EXEMPTION NORM PROPOSALS REVISED

The Department of Forestry Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 15 June 2025 on a revised proposed norm in terms of which the expansion of certain electricity transmission and distribution substations would be excluded from environmental authorisation requirements. The revised draft norm incorporates comments received on proposals gazetted in April 2024.
It is envisaged that, once finalised and in force, the new norm would apply only to activities in areas ‘verified to be of low or medium environmental sensitivity’.
