ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: NATIONAL NORMS & STANDARDS REPLACED

The Department of Health has replaced the December 2015 national norms and standards for environmental health. Immediately effective, the comprehensive set of new requirements includes specific norms and standards for:

  • childcare centres
  • children’s homes
  • old age homes
  • residential mental healthcare facilities
  • health facilities
  • school premises
  • accommodation establishments
  • beauty parlours
  • laundry facilities
  • public swimming pools and spas
  • caravan parks and camping sites
  • construction sites
  • public gathering places
  • ships, aircraft and their points of entry
  • prisons and police holding cells
  • office accommodation
  • premises where animals and/or poultry are kept
  • premises where ‘offensive trades’ are conducted, and
  • vacant land.

This is noting that the term ‘offensive trade’ refers to business activities with the potential to create nuisances that may include bad smells, noise, or dust, and are subject to specific public health and safety regulations (Wikipedia).
