ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: DAMAGE-CAUSING ANIMALS GUIDELINE OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted draft guidelines on the management of damage-causing animals – calling for input by 29 July 2026.

Once finalised, the proposed new guidelines will apply to any wild vertebrate animal capable of causing damage – but not to ‘domestic animals that have become wild or feral’. This is noting that:

  • there is ‘an inherent risk’ of conflict between the habits of wild invertebrate animals and human activity, and that
  • humans should anticipate and avoid situations in which such conflict is likely.

Against that backdrop, among other things the guidelines cover:

  • duty of care
  • translocation
  • deterrent measures
  • regulated measures
  • carcass disposal, and
  • monitoring and reporting.
