ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: SIX NATIONAL PARKS TO BE EXTENDED?

Please note: 1) On 28 February 2025, the department gazetted a notice calling for input by 29 April 2025 on proposals for extending the Western Cape’s Agulhas National Park; 2) On 7 March 2025, the department gazetted a notice on proposals for extending the Western Cape’s Karoo National Park, with 6 May 2025 as the deadline for input.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 22 April 2025 on proposals for extending the following protected areas:

  • Mountain Zebra National Park (Eastern Cape) (Government Gazette notice)
  • Tankwa Karoo National Park (Western Cape) (Government Gazette notice
  • Tankwa Karoo National Park (Northern Cape) (Government Gazette notice), and
  • Namaqua National Park (Northern Cape) (Government Gazette notice).

The extensions envisaged are proposed under the 2003 National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act.
