ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT CODE OF CONDUCT FOR INSPECTORS

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted and called for public comments on a draft code of conduct for designated environmental management inspectors in general, as well as those focusing on the minerals and petroleum sector. The deadline for input is 15 March 2026.

Developed under the 1998 National Environmental Management Act, among other things the draft code covers:

  • values and principles
  • compliance with laws, policies, guidelines and standard operating procedures
  • conduct towards:
    • the environment
    • regulated communities
    • the general public, and
    • other regulatory authorities
  • conflicts of interest
  • gifts
  • misconduct reporting procedures
  • related record keeping
  • confidentiality, and
  • procedures for dealing with contraventions under the Act or the code.
