ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: MINE CLOSURE-RELATED FINANCIAL PROVISIONING

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has extended the financial provisioning compliance deadline for certain mining-related rights and permit holders. This follows proposals released in June 2023 for comment.

Originally gazetted in November 2015, the financial provisioning regulations prescribe requirements to be met pre-mine closure for the management, rehabilitation and remediation of environmental impacts caused while a mine is operational. They include transitional arrangements that have since been amended many times.

Against that backdrop, according to a notice gazetted on 1 September 2023 certain holders of rights and permits for which applications were made before 20 November 2015 now have until 19 February 2024 to comply with the regulations.
