National Treasury has issued a Government Gazette notice calling for input by 21 April 2023 on proposals for exempting Eskom from certain reporting obligations under the Public finance Management Act, 1999.
This follows Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s decision on 5 April 2023 to withdraw a backdated exemption gazetted on 2 April 2023 – apparently without adequate consultation.
According to a joint media statement issued on 5 April 2023 by several National Assembly committees briefed by the Minister on the exemption, it has been temporarily withdrawn to allow ‘adequate consultation with the Auditor-General and Eskom auditors, Deloitte, in order to ensure that checks and balances on corruption are tightened’.
