ESSENTIAL SERVICES: COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES NEW INVESTIGATIONS

The Department of Employment & Labour’s Essential Services Committee has gazetted a notice announcing investigations into the possibility of designating the following services as essential:

  • those rendered by the State Information Technology Agency, and
  • ‘bulk material services for the generation of power’.

The committee is also considering the possible cancelation or variation of a designation affecting a raft of services supplied to the South African National Defence Force by civilian personnel. Issues associated with the right to strike appear to have prompted this particular investigation.

In anticipation of hearing oral representations on dates set out in the notice, the committee has called for written submissions by 16 February 2024.
