According to parliamentary papers, the only piece of gambling-related legislation now before Parliament is the National Gambling Amendment Bill, 2018. The DA’s Remote Gambling Bill lapsed at the end of the previous Parliament and has not yet been revived.
As a result, certain aspects of an article penned by CMS director Sihle Bulose and candidate attorney Zanrie Linstrom are misleading. Focusing on the status of gambling legislation, the article refers to the DA Bill as one waiting to be processed by the National Assembly, the article may have been informed by an outdated list of Bills on the home page of Parliament’s website. That list also features other DA Bills yet to be revived and needs to be updated.
Focusing largely on governance matters, the National Gambling Amendment Bill was passed by the National Assembly in December 2018 but lapsed at the end of the fifth Parliament. Later revived, the Bill was eventually rejected by the NCOP in December 2021 and referred to Parliament’s Mediation Committee – where it remained for the duration of the sixth Parliament before lapsing for the second time. Revived in July 2024, the Bill has since been returned to Parliament’s Mediation Committee.
