GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: ACT ESTABLISHING COUNCIL NOW IN FORCE

The National Council on Gender-Based Violence & Femicide Act is now in force. This is according to a presidential proclamation gazetted nearly six months after the Act joined the statute books.

A memorandum on the objects of the Bill concerned provides some insight into its genesis, which began with resolutions taken at a November 2018 presidential summit on gender-based violence and femicide. Informed by a national strategic plan for addressing these complex issues, the new piece of legislation provides for the institutional arrangements necessary for the council’s effective functioning. The plan was developed by an interim steering committee established in April 2019.
