GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES COUNCIL: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT AMENDMENT BILL

The Department of Sport, Arts & Culture has gazetted a notice calling for input by 5 April 2026 on a draft South African Geographical Names Council Amendment Bill.

Informed by extensive consultations in all nine provinces, the proposed new piece of legislation seeks to:

  • ‘strengthen governance structures’
  • ‘improve administrative processes’, and
  • ‘enhance the overall effectiveness of the Council in fulfilling its statutory mandate’.

Against that backdrop, among other things the draft Bill’s long title refers to provisions for:

  • ‘mandatory public consultation processes’
  • the establishment and maintenance of a computerised database, and
  • an appeals tribunal.
