GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS: DRAFT INVENTORY REPORT OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted a draft greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory report – calling for input by 28 June 2026. Compiled in keeping with UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) guidelines, the draft report:

  • documents South Africa’s 2024 GHG inventory per emission type and contributing sector, and
  • outlines GHG trends per emission contributing sector for the period 1990 to 2024.

According to the document’s executive summary, the energy sector ‘remains the dominant contributor to national emissions’ (78.6%) – followed by agriculture (11.0%), industrial processes and product use (6.4%), and the waste sector (4.0%). These figures exclude the impact of land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF).

Between 1990 and 2024, total emissions trends (excluding LULUCF) point to ‘a pattern of initial growth followed by stabilisation and a gradual decline in more recent years’.

Once finalised, the document will form part of South Africa’s second biennial transparency report to the UNFCCC.
