The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has published South Africa’s eighth national greenhouse gas inventory report on emissions from 2000 to 2020. It was prepared in keeping with government’s international obligations as a member of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
According to a backdated media statement issued on 28 April 2023, the report focuses on ‘four broad emission sectors’: energy: industrial processes and product use: agriculture, forestry and other land use; and waste.
Predictably in the circumstances, during the twenty-year period concerned the biggest sources of greenhouse emissions were power generation; transport; industrial fuel use; fugitive emissions from fuel processing; livestock; and waste management.
