GROUNDWATER PROTECTION & MANAGEMENT: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT REGULATIONS

The Department of Water & Sanitation has gazetted draft regulations on groundwater resource protection and sustainable management – calling for public comments by 1 March 2026.

Developed under the 1998 National Water Act, the proposed new regulations focus on:

  • identifying and controlling certain activities related to the drilling and management of boreholes and aquifers
  • setting the necessary general and specific requirements, practices and standards
  • improving groundwater resource data and information management by providing for:
  • groundwater user geosite registration
  • driller and pump installer registration, and
  • the creation of a system for capturing:
    • borehole drilling and geosite information, as well as
    • geohydrological information and reports, and
  • streamlining the South African National Standards for groundwater management, drilling and pump testing.
