HATE CRIMES BILL: NCOP COMMITTEE CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

Please note: The deadline for submissions has been extended to 22 May 2023.
The NCOP Committee on Security & Justice has called for written submissions by 12 May 2023 on the Prevention & Combating of Hate Crimes & Hate Speech Bill’s ‘B’ version.
According to the committee notice concerned, once operationalised the new piece of legislation will give effect – among other things – to South Africa’s international obligations regarding ‘human rights instruments’ intended to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
To that end, the Bill seeks to criminalise a range of actions motivated by hatred and make hate speech an offence.
