HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD WASTE: MANAGEMENT STRATEGY GAZETTED FOR IMPLEMENTATION

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has published a strategy for managing hazardous household waste. Released in draft form in January 2023 for public comment, the strategy was developed as a baseline governance model for collecting, transporting and storing hazardous household waste at municipal level.

The intention is that individual municipalities should use the strategy as a starting point for preparing interventions best suited to local conditions. As things now stand, well-functioning hazardous household waste collection and treatment value chains are apparently few and far between. Those operating effectively tend to form part of private sector extended producer responsibility programmes.

Against that backdrop, the strategy covers lead acid batteries, used oils, electrical and electronic equipment, light sources and a raft of miscellaneous articles including paints, solvents, cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides and aerosols.
