The Department of Sport, Arts & Culture has gazetted a notice calling for public comments on a draft policy framework for heritage memorialisation. This is noting that the economic development and employment-related expectations of communities located near post-apartheid legacy sites have remained largely unfulfilled. The deadline for input is 20 June 2025.
According to the draft framework, given ongoing fiscal constraints national government’s approach towards ‘memorialisation’ is to move away from establishing high maintenance interpretation centres and museums towards ‘low maintenance commemorative structures’.
Against that backdrop, the document outlines principles and criteria for refocusing existing projects and supporting stakeholders in their efforts to establish ‘sustainable memorialisation projects’.
