The South African Heritage Resources Agency has called for input by 1 March 2024 on a draft national thematic framework for heritage resource management.
This is noting that the National Heritage Resources Act, 1999, requires the state to establish and implement an ‘integrated system’ for identifying and assessing the cultural significance of all national heritage resources.
An introduction to the draft framework refers to a grading system and related criteria published in May 2003 – followed in 2004 and 2005 by theme category proposals and a thematic chart. Apparently, these were never added to regulations in place since 2000 and have therefore not been widely used. They are now being revised, hence the importance of stakeholder input on the framework now being proposed.
