HUNTING TROPHIES: 2026/27 ELEPHANT, BLACK RHINO & LEOPARD QUOTA PROPOSALS GAZETTED

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has gazetted proposed provincial quotas for elephant, black rhino and leopard hunting trophies during 2026 and 2027. The deadline for input is 8 March 2026.

Informed by regulations issued in 2010 under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna & Flora (CITES), the draft quotas were prepared in terms of related provisions in the 2004 National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act. This is noting that, while the black rhino and leopard are respectfully categorised as ‘critically endangered’ and ‘vulnerable’ on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature red list of threatened species, the elephant is ‘of least concern’.
