ICASA AMENDS NUMBERING PLAN REGULATIONS

Amendments to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA’s) numbering plan regulations came into effect on 29 March 2023 but may have been published several days later. The accompanying Government Gazette notice appears to have been a backdated and retrospectively added to the eGazette page.

Released in draft form in March 2022 for public comment, according to an ICASA reasons document gazetted with the final amendments, among other things they:

  • clarify certain definitions in the hope of facilitating implementation and promoting compliance
  • release additional number capacity, and
  • refine and supplement existing provisions in the hope of:
    • promoting the more efficient use and management of number resources, and
    • protecting the rights of subscribers.
