INTERNATIONAL MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATIONS: REVISED DRAFT ROADMAP OUT FOR COMMENT

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has called for input by 16 February 2025 on a revised draft roadmap for international mobile telecommunications. It reflects some of the input received on a first draft released n September 2024 for public comment.

As ‘the latest in a series of steps carried out by ... (ICASA) to support spectrum management and long-term planning’, the revised draft ‘sets out … (its) approach towards assigning radio frequency spectrum’ with the aim of:

  • meeting an ever-increasing demand for mobile broadband, and
  • facilitating universal mobile broadband access.

It is underpinned by ICASA’s international obligations to:

  • ‘minimise harmful interference’, and
  • ensure that customers benefit from ‘the economies of scale resulting from the widespread adoption of standard technologies’.
