INVESTIGATING DIRECTORATE AGAINST CORRUPTION: NPA AMENDMENT BILL READY FOR TABLING

Please note: On 25 August 2023, the Bil’s explanatory summary was re-gazetted. No explanation was provided.

The Department of Justice & Correctional Services has gazetted an explanatory summary of the National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill, which seeks to make the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) a permanent entity.

Soon to be tabled in Parliament, the Bill is one of several measures being taken to implement recommendations in the Zondo Commission report. As such, it featured in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s October 2022 address to the nation outlining government’s response to the commission’s findings.

The IDAC was established in March 2019 ‘to investigate common law offences including fraud, forgery, uttering, theft and any offence involving dishonesty’, according to a media statement issued at the time.

The Bill is not yet publicly available.
