IPID AMENDMENT ACT GAZETTED

Please note: On 31 July 2024 the Presidency issued a media statement on the Bill, which by then had already been gazetted as an Act.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate Amendment Act has joined the statute books but is not yet in force. Responding to the 2016 Constitutional Court McBride judgment on the directorate’s institutional and operational independence, the Act also provides for:

  • investigations into allegations of rape by police officers
  • allegations of death resulting from the actions of police officers
  • disciplinary matters, and
  • remuneration.

Interestingly, at the time of writing the Presidency had yet to issue a media statement announcing that the Bill concerned had been signed into law. It was passed by Parliament in March 2024.
