The National Assembly’s Police Committee has issued a media statement announcing the completion of its work on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Amendment Bill. According to the statement, ‘the committee is satisfied that there are adequate checks and balances to ensure effective monitoring and oversight by Parliament over the directorate and its work’.
Tabled in July 2023, the Bill ‘seeks to entrench the institutional and operational independence of IPID, in keeping with the requirements of a 2016 Constitutional Court ruling popularly known as ‘the McBride judgment’.
A report reflecting changes made by the committee has been tabled in the House. Unfortunately, at the time of writing a ‘B’ version of the Bill incorporating those changes was still not available.
