IPID BILL READY TO BE PASSED BY NCOP AND SENT TO PRESIDENT

Please note: Parliamentary papers have confirmed that, on 19 March 2024, the NCOP passed the Bill and sent it to the President for signature.

The NCOP’s Security & Justice Committee has adopted the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Amendment Bill’s ‘B’ version and tabled a report in the House recommending that it be passed. No further changes have been proposed.

The Bill’s overarching objective is to respond to a 2016 Constitutional Court McBride judgment on the directorate’s institutional and operational independence. In addition, the Bill provides for:

  • investigations into allegations of rape by police officers
  • allegations of death resulting from the actions of police officers
  • disciplinary matters, and
