IRON AND STEEL, FLAT-ROLLED PRODUCTS: ITAC INVESTIGATES NEED FOR ‘SAFEGUARD’ MEASURES AGAINST CHEAP IMPORTS

The International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) has announced its intention to investigate whether the ‘serious injury’ experienced by flat-rolled iron and steel producers and manufacturers in the South African Customs Union could be causally linked to a recent and significant surge in imports of the products concerned. To that end, ITAC has gazetted a notice calling for input by 6 February 2025 from stakeholders with information relevant to the investigation, which is being conducted following an application from ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited supported by SAFAL. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether remedial safeguard measures are necessary.

A similar investigation announced on 27 December 2024 by notice in the Government Gazette has been terminated.
