JUDICIAL EDUCATION INSTITUTE ACT TO BE AMENDED

A Judicial Education Institute Amendment Bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon – in anticipation of which the procedurally required explanatory summary has been gazetted.

The changes envisaged seek to:

  • provide for:
    • the appointment of a judge as dean, to serve as the institute’s academic head, and
    • the dean’s powers and duties
  • further clarify:
    • the appointment process for the institute’s executive director, and
    • the executive director’s powers and duties, and to
  • provide for subsistence and travel expenses reimbursements to the institute’s members.

This is noting that – according to the Southern African Legal Information Institute (SAFLII) – the Act’s sections 14 and 19 have yet to be proclaimed. They deal respectively with staff remuneration and council members’ reimbursements.
