The Parliamentary Monitoring Group has published a Judicial Service Commission (JSC) media statement calling for public comments on proposals for revising two sets of procedures. The deadline for input is 17 September 2026.
The draft revised procedures deal with:
- shortlisting, interviewing and recommending candidates for judicial appointment, and
- breaches of JSC members’ duties regarding confidentiality, legal obligations and applicable ethical or professional standards.
Intended to provide ‘a clear and transparent framework (for) governing … JSC processes’, according to the statement the proposed revisions also seek to ‘further address the transfer of judges from one High Court to another’.
In particular, input is sought on:
- transparency and openness in the judicial appointment process
- fairness and consistency in the consideration of candidates
- meaningful public participation in relation to shortlisted candidates
- accountability and integrity in the work of the Commission
- appropriate safeguards for confidential information and deliberations
- compliance with the constitutional and legislative framework governing the JSC, and
- appropriate mechanisms for addressing matters allegedly breaching JSC members’ obligations.
