JUST ENERGY TRANSITION: FINANCING MECHANISM PROPOSALS OUT FOR COMMENT

Please note: The Parliamentary Monitoring Group website notice setting a deadline for public comment on the proposals was withdrawn during the festive season. However, it appears to have been copied from a notice posted on the Presidential Climate Commission website on 5 December 2023.
The Presidential Climate Commission established in 2020 has published a report with proposals for a just transition financing mechanism to facilitate the move away from coal-fuelled power stations towards cleaner sources of energy. Input is sought by 24 January 2024.
According to the document’s executive summary, the mechanism envisaged would raise funds for ‘crucial interventions’ likely to include:
- workforce development and reskilling
- economic diversification
- sustainable agriculture
- clean energy infrastructure, and
- social protection.
The document also explores the practicalities of establishing the mechanism itself, as well as developing the necessary regulatory frameworks.
The notice calling for public comments was posted on the Parliamentary Monitoring Group website.
