LAND TRANSPORT: LATEST FIVE-YEAR STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK GAZETTED

The Department of Transport has gazetted a five-year national strategic framework to guide integrated land transport planning and delivery at all three spheres of government. The framework was released in draft form in March 2023 for public comment.

Among other things, it covers:

  • urban transport and ‘smart mobility’
  • rural, non-motorised, learner, freight and cross-border transport
  • ‘universal accessibility’
  • transport infrastructure
  • transport safety and security, and
  • institutional management.

Regarding funding, the document’s executive summary notes that ‘all transport schemes and major integrated public transport network … project interventions must be supported by a strong socio-economic case for investment and by the institutional commitment from municipalities with their associated provinces’.
