LEGAL PRACTICE ACT: COMMUNITY SERVICE REGULATIONS GAZETTED AND IN FORCE

Please note: On 25 August 2023, the regulations were replaced. In the absence of an explanatory note it is not clear why, especially since the two versions appear to be identical. The replacement regulations came into effect immediately.

Regulations on community service for legal practitioners and candidate attorneys were gazetted on 11 August 2023 and came into effect immediately.

Prescribing the circumstances in which the work of a practising legal professional or candidate attorney may be deemed to be ‘community service’, the regulations require that, annually, each affected individual should dedicate at least 40 and eight hours respectively to that type of work.

Proof of community service certificates are provided as annexures to the regulations. To be submitted annually to the Legal Practice Council, in the case of practising legal professionals the regulations require a certificate to be signed by the recipient of services rendered.
