Legal Practice Act regulations on community service and procedures for electing Council members have been adopted by the NCOP’s Security & Justice Committee.
Released in draft form in June 2022 for public comment, the regulations were approved by the National Assembly in March 2023 and sent to the NCOP for concurrence.
Sub-section 94(3) of the Act requires the Minister to table all regulations and any proposed amendments in Parliament before publishing them in the Government Gazette.
The Act’s sub-sections 94(1)(j) and 94(1)(c) respectively refer to regulations on community service [as contemplated in sub-section 29(1)] and procedures for electing Council members [as contemplated in section 7(1)(a)].
Security & Justice Committee Committee’s reports on the regulations featured among orders for an NCOP sitting on 16 May 2023. Once approved by the House they will be ready for gazetting.
At the time of writing, the regulations were not publicly available.
