The Legal Practice Council has announced two rule changes by notice in the Government Gazette. They have implications for:
Immediately effective, ‘every pupil undergoing practical vocational training in terms of a … contract shall (now) be entitled to no less than … such reasonable remuneration, allowances, or stipend (if any) as may be determined from time to time by the Council’.
In the face of financial constraints resulting from ‘pending litigation’ affecting revenue streams, this rule change was deemed urgent and therefore not subjected to the required prior public consultation process. In that context, anyone aggrieved by the change has until 22 May 2026 to submit a complaint.
Regarding amendments to the definition of ‘good standing’, the notice makes no reference to prior stakeholder consultation.
In the absence of a comprehensive updated version of the Council’s rules reflecting all amendments made over the years, a link is provided below to the website page listing them.
