LEGAL PRACTICE COUNCIL: NATIONAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE APPROVES COMMUNITY SERVICE REGULATIONS

The National Assembly’s Justice & Correctional Services Committee has approved two sets of draft regulations prepared under the Legal Practice Act, 2014.

According to committee reports tabled recently in the House, one set of regulations deals with community service. The other focuses on procedures for electing Council members.

At the time of writing, the proposed new regulations were not available. Neither had they been finalised and gazetted.

However, in its report on the draft community service regulations, the committee notes that the intention is for:

  • candidate legal practitioners to ‘undertake eight hours per annum’, and for
  • practising legal practitioners to ‘render 40 hours per annum’.

These proposals were released in draft form in June 2022 for public comment.
