The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development has gazetted a notice calling for input by 17 March 2024 on draft amendments to regulations under the Liquor Products Act, 1989.
Posted on the old departmental website, the amendments now being proposed:
- may well be intended to align the regulations with the Liquor Products Amendment Act, 2021, which came into force in August 2023, and
- with that possibly in mind, among other things have implications for:
- traditional beer
- alcoholic fruit beverages
- ‘sacramental alcoholic beverages’
- alcoholic fermentation processes of various types
- beverage class designation
- labelling (including the ‘drinking message’ and product contents), and
- the containers in which certain ingredients are sold.
It is envisaged that the penalty for non-compliance would be ‘a fine not exceeding R10 000’, ‘imprisonment for a period not exceeding twelve months - or both.
