LIQUOR PRODUCTS ACT REGULATIONS: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT AMENDMENTS

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform & Rural Development has gazetted a notice calling for input by 12 June 2024 on more draft amendments to regulations under the Liquor Products Act, 1989. The notice was included in a composite National Regulations Gazette published on 13 May 2024 but backdated to 10 May 2024.

Posted on the department’s old website, the proposed amendments have implications for a raft of spirits, liqueurs, aperitifs and flavoured spirits, among other things affecting:

  • the use of agave
  • the upper limit of:
    • residual sugar content, and
    • alcohol content, and
  • ‘distinctive sensory characteristics’.

A substitute Regulation 58 (appeals) is also proposed.

Unfortunately, as far as can be ascertained, there is no publicly available consolidated version of all the amendments made over the years to the original 1989 regulations.

  • Government Gazette notice
  • draft amendments
  • Liquor Products Act, as amended
