LOCAL GOVERNMENT: GENERAL LAWS AMENDMENT BILL TO ‘FORTIFY’ LEGAL FRAMEWORK

‘Multiple pieces of legislation impacting local governance’ will be the focus of a ‘general laws amendment Bill’ that is expected to ‘solidify good practices, address any regulatory vacuums, and eradicate or mitigate detrimental practices’. According to Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs Minister Thembisile Nkadimeng, the Bill’s overarching objective is to ‘streamline and fortify the legal framework governing municipalities, promoting more effective and transparent governance’.

Speaking during a media briefing on her department’s latest municipal support interventions, the Minister also referred to:

  • an Intergovernmental, Monitoring, Support & Interventions Bill (which has already been released in draft form for public comment, as SA Legal Academy reported at the time), and
  • a Local Government: Municipal Structures Amendment Bill (which is apparently still a work in progress and will focus on coalitions, as SA Legal Academy has also reported).
