LOCAL GOVERNMENT: MUNICIPAL SYSTEMS AMENDMENT ACT IN FORCE

Most sections of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Amendment Act, 2022, came into force on 18 October. This has just been announced by presidential proclamation in the Government Gazette. Expected to make a significant contribution to ongoing efforts to professionalise and depoliticise local government, the Act replaces one in operation between 2011 and 2017, when it was declared unconstitutional because of parliamentary procedural errors in processing the Bill.
