Please note: On 4 December 2023, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment gazetted a revised set of draft regulations for public comment.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input on a third set of draft regulations on mercury management. They follow but make no reference to two sets of proposals published in July 2022. It is not clear if input on these draft regulations informed what appears to be a third attempt at domesticating the Minamata Convention on Mercury, 2013, which South Africa ratified in 2019.
Once operationalised, among other thing the regulations will require manufacturers whose production processes use mercury or mercury compounds to develop and implement phase-down management plans. Dental amalgam manufacturing will also be affected.
