MARINE POLLUTION: INPUT SOUGHT ON THREE MISSING SETS OF DRAFT REGULATIONS

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has gazetted notices calling for input on three sets of marine pollution-related draft regulations – referring stakeholders to their website for the documents concerned. However, at the time of writing they had yet to be published. The apparent disconnect between Government Gazette notices and the SAMSA website has been a recurring problem for several years. Once again, no commentary deadline has been set.
This notwithstanding, according to the notices themselves the proposed new regulations separately focus on:
- preventing sewage pollution from ships (notice)
- marine oil pollution ‘preparedness, response and cooperation’ (notice), and
- maritime pollution preparedness and response fund administration (notice)
As soon as the documents become available, links will be added to this report.
