MEDIA AND DIGITAL PLATFORMS MARKET INQUIRY: INPUT SOUGHT ON STATEMENT OF ISSUES

The Competition Commission has published a statement of issues to be explored during its media and digital platforms market inquiry, calling for stakeholder input. This follows the finalisation of the inquiry’s terms of reference, which were gazetted in September 2023.

The statement includes questions on each issue, responses to which should reach the Commission by 14 November 2023.

According to an accompanying press release, the inquiry will ‘delve into various issues facing (news) media sustainability … as news consumption rapidly shifts online and traditional sources of funding … (from) print and broadcasting advertising decline’.

The issues identified include:

  • imbalances in the bargaining power of digital platforms and news media organisations, and
  • the interface between generative AI, digital advertising and online news media distribution.

Input is also sought on the appropriateness of certain remedies where market practices already impact adversely on competition or are likely to do so.
