MERCHANT SHIP CONSTRUCTION REGULATIONS: DRAFT AMENDMENTS OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Transport has called for input by 23 July 2023 on proposals for substantive amendments to regulations under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1951, affecting the construction of sea-going vessels.

They follow an October 2022 call for comments on draft amendments to regulations focusing on the construction and equipping of specific types of fishing vessel.

Among other things, the most recent set of proposals has implications for vessels carrying passengers, as well as for structural requirements intended to mitigate flood and fire-related emergencies at sea.
