MERCHANT SHIPPING ACT: DRAFT CREW ACCOMMODATION REGULATIONS OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Transport has called for input by 24 September 2023 on proposals for regulating crew accommodation commercial vessels of at least 25 gross tons and registered in South Africa.

Once finalised and in force, they will apply to new vessel about to be registered in South Africa, as well as existing vessels undergoing alterations. They will apparently not apply to fishing and pleasure vessels.

The proposed new regulations cover a plethora of issues related to crew accommodation, including:

  • heating and ventilation
  • height
  • drinking water supply
  • drainage
  • healthcare facilities
  • protection from mosquitos
  • laundry and ablution facilities
  • galleys and food storage facilities, and
  • recreation and study facilities.

The intention is that they should repeal and replace regulations in force since 1961.
