MERCHANT SHIPPING: INPUT SOUGHT ON LIFESAVING, FIRE-RELATED REGULATORY PROPOSALS

The Department of Transport has gazetted a comprehensive set of regulatory proposals under the 1953 Merchant Shipping Act, focusing on lifesaving equipment and fire-related appliance requirements specific to each class of vessel. The deadline for input is 15 December 2025.

Referred to as ‘draft amendments’ to regulations in place since 1968 and amended several times, the document nevertheless provides for:

  • the repealing of some in their entirety
  • the phasing out others, and
  • the exemption of certain classes of vessels constructed before certain provisions come into force.

Detailed requirements specific to each class of vessel include provisions intended to ensure operational readiness, maintenance and regular inspection.
