MERCHANT SHIPPING REGULATIONS: INPUT SOUGHT ON DRAFT AMENDMENTS

The Department of Transport has gazetted substantive proposed amendments to safety of navigation regulations under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1951 – calling for input by 21 January 2024. Originally published in 1968, the regulations have since been amended several times.

Among other things, the changes now envisaged introduce proposed new chapters covering an array of requirements on matters that include:

  • automatic identification systems and voyage data recorders
  • navigation bridge visibility, and
  • the carriage and maintenance of nautical charts and publications.
