MERCURY MANAGEMENT REGULATIONS: REVISED DRAFT OUT FOR COMMENT

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 2 February 2024 on revised draft regulations among other things intended to domesticate the UN’s 2023 Minamata Convention on Mercury. According to the Government Gazette notice concerned, the latest iteration reflects some comments on a draft released in March 2023 for public comment.

Once in force, the regulations are expected to go some way towards:

  • managing the release of mercury into the environment, and
  • reducing the anthropogenic mercury emissions resulting from industrial and manufacturing processes.

They will also provide for:

  • the phasing out of ‘mercury added products’
  • the phasing down the use of dental amalgam, and
  • regulate mercury storage facilities.
